Becoming Otherwise (18+)

Through landscapes, archives, bodies, species, histories and solidarities.

When: 24 October 17:30

Where: Tiivistämö Kaasutehtaankatu 1, 00540 Helsinki

Screening of five short films selected from the The International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns by its founders Sasha Ihnatovich and Jasmina Mustafić.

Across decolonial futurism, ecological intimacy, performance, diary film and archival footage, films in this programme connect queer and trans* bodies to landscapes, histories, other species and collective memory. The films were presented in Slovenia at the 27th International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns (Rdeče zore), a Ljubljana-based festival grounded in feminist and queer art, politics and activism, as part of the short-film programme Weird Films: Queer Landscapes of Body and Memory at the Slovenian Cinematheque. Queerness emerges here as relational, unfinished and resistant to normative demands for coherence. In dialogue with Shared Frequencies, the programme understands solidarity as a lived and cinematic practice through which kinship, survival and collective imagination can take form.

About the founders:

Sasha Ihnatovich and Jasmina Mustafić are founders of the Red Dawns Film Collective, a queerfeminist DIY film initiative focused on short-form cinema, queer porn, and erotics. The collective brings films to audiences in Slovenia that explore bodies, desire, intimacy, gender, and sexuality beyond normative frameworks, while creating space for pleasure, experimentation, self-reflection, and alternative ways of seeing and relating. It foregrounds independent feminist and queer filmmaking as a practice of imagining and creating alternative narratives, forms of solidarity, and more just and livable worlds.

The International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns

Red Dawns began in 2000 at the Autonomous Cultural Centre Metelkova mesto in Ljubljana, out of a need to create space for feminist cultural production, political reflection, and collective forms of gathering. Initiated by women active in KUD Mreža, ŠKUC-LL, Monokel, the Women’s Centre, and Kasandra, the festival emerged from questions around gendered labour, visibility, access to public space, and the position of women within art, culture, activism, and everyday life.

Since its beginnings around March 8, International Women’s Day, Red Dawns has developed as a feminist and queer festival committed to creating space for artistic experimentation, critical reflection, solidarity, and alternative ways of working and being together. Its programmes challenge patriarchal, heteronormative, hierarchical, exploitative, and capitalist structures while imagining more just, accessible, and livable forms of cultural and social life.
